Unit 16
Task M2
In this assignment I will be comparing how the different theories of Taylor, Mayo,
Maslow and Herzberg contribute to the techniques used for employee motivation
in my chosen organisation Debenhams. I have done this in a form of a report.
Theory- Frederick Winslow Taylor
Example of how the theory is used in Debenhams:
Taylor’s has suggested that money is a motivator; this is because Taylor believed
that employees are more motivated if they feel satisfied in their work. Employee
motivation is also likely to be higher if the organisation invests in its staff
through training and development.
This is beneficial at Debenhams because the wage that is being paid to the staffs
will be motivating as it is a reasonable amount of money being paid hourly.
This method of motivation is appropriate for younger workers. This is because
the young generation seem to need money for their social life and for studies
reasons etc. It is also suitable for students/graduates because it allows them to
make money on the side while trying to reach their dream goal. In addition
Debenhams increases the hourly pay of staffs as they go older. This motivates
them to stay with the company for longer as they are getting paid more.
Theory- Elton Mayo
Example of how the theory is used in Debenhams:
Mayo’s suggested in his theory that using similar factors is a good way of
motivating. Good communication, teamwork, feedback, looking after one
another, providing work that is not repetitive and is interesting all contribute in
raising the motivation levels. This works well for Debenhams because, as their
staffs are doing long hours of work they need to be able to provide jobs that are
non repetitive therefore the employees stay focused and interested in the job.
They won’t get bored as they will always have something to do.
This is relevant in Debenhams because they need to keep their staffs happy so
that they will not leave their jobs. Moreover it will be time consuming for
Debenhams to hire and train new staffs as they will have to learn the skills
required for the job from the basics to the harder task.
For this theory of motivation full time workers doing long hours will need to be
looked after as they will carry a positive trait towards the business.
Theory- Abraham Maslow
