NDAEB 5.0 Patient Care Procedures 1. Antecubital Space Small groove or fold in the inner arm, at or "in front of" (ante) the elbow (cubitus). 2. Arrhythmia Abnormality and irregularity in the force or rhythm of the heartbeat. 3. Blood Pressure Pressure exerted against the walls of the blood vessels. 4. Brachial Relating to the arm. 5. Carotid Relating to either of the two major arteries on each side of the neck that carry blood to the head. 6. Depth In respiration, the amount of air in a breath. 7. Diastolic The normal rhythmic realization and dilation of the heart chambers. 8. Electrocardiogram Instrument used in the detecting and diagnosis of heart abnormalities. It generates a record of the electrical currents associated with heart muscle activity. 9. Korotkoff Sounds Specific sounds heard when one is taking a blood pressure. 10. Metabolism Physical and chemical processes that occur within a living cell or organism and are necessary for the maintenance of life. 11. Oximetry Measurement of oxygen concentration in the blood. 12. Palpate To examine or explore by touching. 13. Pulse Rhythmic throbbing of the arteries produced by regular contractions of the heart. 14. Radial Related to the radius (bone) or foramen (ante brachium). 15. Rate A quantity measured, as in breaths and heartbeats. 16. Respiration Act or process of inhaling and exhaling (breathing). 17. Rhythm A sequence or pattern, such as the heartbeat of breathing. 18. Sphygmomanometer Instrument for measuring blood pressure in the arteries. 19. Stethoscope Instrument used for listening to sounds produced within the body.
