Inleiding
In deze zelfstudie wordt radioactiviteit, de verschillende vervalwijzen van radioactieve
nucliden en de gevolgen daarvan behandeld.
Leerdoelen
Na het volgen van het college en het maken van de zelfstudie is de student in staat om:
· te beschrijven wat radioactiviteit is als het ioniserende straling uitzendt en een relatie
te leggen met de bouw van het atoom. de straling komt vrij bij het uiteenvallen van een
kern
· uit te leggen hoe het komt dat een kern instabiel is. als er te veel protonen of te veel
neutronen zijn, de kernkracht moet groter zijn dan de afstotende elektrische kracht (van
de protonen)
· onderscheid maken tussen isotopen, isobaren, isotonen en isomeren en deze
kunnen noteren. isotopen (hetzelfde aantal protonen), isobaren (hetzelfde aantal
kerndeeltjes), isotonen (hetzelfde aantal neutronen) en isomeren (hetzelfde aantal
neutronen en protonen)
· drie soorten straling welke vrij komt bij radioactiviteit (α, β en gamma)
onderscheiden.
· eigenschappen (ontstaan, massa, lading, doordringend vermogen) van de drie
soorten kernstraling benoemen.
· de zeven vervalwijzen in eigen woorden te omschrijven en per vervalwijze aan te
geven:
- Teveel neutronen: 1. negatief bètaverval (β - -verval)
- Teveel protonen: 2. positief bètaverval (β + -verval)
3. elektronvangst (Electron Capture EC)
- Zware kernen: 4. alfaverval
- Hele zware kernen: 5. spontane splijting
- Nog energie over: 6. gammaverval
