Question 1 1.1 Figuratively 1.2 The jelly fish’s position changes from time to time as it opens and closes in its motion. Furthermore, the jelly fish is visible, but in a flash becomes invisible as it is slightly bluish and transparent. Therefore, both in movement and appearance, the jelly is fluctuating. 3 lOMoARcPSD|.3 The poem describes the characteristics of a jelly fish which can be interpreted to mean human desires and female nature. Human desires are ever changing. Female nature too. This is exactly what happens with the jelly fish which is extremely difficult to catch with one’s hands. Even its visibility is difficult because it is semitransparent. Generally, the desires and dreams we have today change with change in circumstances of environment, aging and time. Desires and life goals are not easily met just as the jelly fish is difficult to catch. Charming and attractiveness are also an inherent nature of any dream or desire. We desire that which is beautiful and not always withing reach. 1.4 I think the word choice is a little too much for EFAL learners considering not only their age but also the fact that English is not their home language. For instance, “fluctuating charm” is quite advanced for this age group. Most would not be comfortable with the word “fluctuate,” not mentioning the phrase itself. A few children know the word as changing prices of goods but not as a description of charm. The other word that sounds difficult for this group of learners is “amethyst.” Such a word may divert the attention of the learners from the poem and once the teacher explains what the word means the group ends up knowing the meaning of the crystal stone and not invest in interpreting the poem. Words and phrases grace the poem, but they should not be a hindrance that stops learners from grappling with the meaning of the poem. I, however, have to mention that the rest of the poem’s wording is age and language level appropriate. 1.5 Imagery
