Unit 1: Developing Efeecve Communieacon in Health and Soeial Care
M2: Review strategies used in health and social care environments to overcome barriers to efectve
communicaton and interpersonal interactonss
D1: Evaluate strategies used in health and social care environments to overcome barriers to efectve
communicaton and interpersonal interactonss
In this task, I will be evaluatng the strengths and weaknesses of all the strategies from the
previous task (P4)s Because there were 8 diferent strategies used to overcome barriers of
communicaton, each strategy will of course have some strengths and some weaknesses, which I will
be discussings
The frst strategy was to conduct an assessment of need on Greg, who had uncontrollable
aggression to his younger sisters when he was at homes A strength to an assessment of need is that
it could possibly diagnose Greg with a conditon that he has (esgs autsm or ADHD)s This would clarify
Greg’s conditon and also give other people around Greg the right training, not only on his possible
conditon, but also on his preferred method of communicatons A weakness to the assessment of
need is that it could be wasted tme and money if Greg wasn’t diagnosed with any conditonss This
assessment of need done by a doctor would be a wasted appointment (which could had gone to a
patent who is more ill), and also wasted moneys
Secondly, when Greg shouted a Margaret, a member of staf, I believe that staf training
would be the most appropriate method for Margarets Staf training would allow Margaret to handle
the situaton diferently so that it doesn’t escalate next tmes A strength to staf training is that
Margaret would learn in more detail about dealing with a situaton with service users who are
depressed and stresseds It would also allow Margaret to difuse the situaton and provide needed
supports On the other hand, a weakness to staf training is tme, it is very likely that all the staf are
always busy on their shif and will be unable to fnd the tme to do staf trainings It is also very likely
that not all of the staf will be able to partcipate in the trainings This would be a weakness because if
only half the staf have the training and the other half didn’t, there would be an inconsistency to the
service users in the hostels Not only this, but the staf would have diferent ways and methods of
communicatng, also making it difcult for the service users to adjusts
The third barrier to communicaton was when Greg slammed the door in Margaret’s face,
the strategy that I believe would work in this instance is if Greg was more assertves A strength to
being assertve is that stress is reduceds With stress being reduced, this would help Greg massively,
this is because Greg would be more confdent and calm, allowing him to express his reasons without
getting aggressives It would also allow him to express more ideass However, a weakness of being
assertve is that sometmes, being assertve can be seen as being over confdent, which can make
people appear arrogant and rudes This could make Greg become angrier than he once was because
he would be portrayed as rude and cocky, when actually he is trying to improve his old ways and
become someone who is more confdent and less angrys Also, training Greg to become assertve
would take tme and also being consistent, something that Greg may struggle withs
The next barrier to communicaton is two teenagers living in the hostel who have hearing
impairmentss The strategy to fx this barrier is for the two teenagers to have a preferred method of
communicaton, like Britsh Sign Languages A strength to preferred method of communicaton is that
everyone knows what language they use, so for example if there was an emergency, everyone
around them knew their preferred method of communicaton was so that they could get the help
they need if no one else was arounds People around them would also know a litle of their sign
