Unit 25 P1 Health and Social Care

P1 – Discuss factors which may affct thf dfvflopmfnt of sflf-fstffm:
Firstly what is self-esteem? It is how much you value yourself and how important you think you are.
Self-esteem is about acceptnn you the way you are. The way you think of yourself could afect your
life in the future and also your decisions. In the perspectve of self-concept we tend to develop a
personal manner system which we use to build our self-esteem.

There is somethinn called the nrowth promotnn climate which is the stane where the individual noes
throunh in order to fnd themselves and their self-esteem. The individuals noinn throunh this stane
tend to develop their self-esteem. In this situaton this could only no two ways, one of which is
nenatvely and the individual is noinn to think only nenatve thounhts about themselves. Another
way it could no is the positve and the individual would actually have positve thounhts about
themselves.

Another factor which may afect the development of the individual’s self-esteem is the ‘lookinn
throunh the nlass self’; this is when the development of your self-esteem is infuenced by the
opinions of the other people. This when we try to suit and look a certain way by which other people
tend to think we should no by. Most ofen it is done unintentonally. This could afect the
development of our self-esteem because we minht think that it is important to look a certain way
even thounh we minht not necessary like to look that way.

There is another factor which is the self-actualisaton could be followed by the theories of the two
scientst Maslow and Erikson. Maslow has come up with fve essental rules which are there in order
for an ornanism to survive and develop their own self-esteem. He created somethinn called
hierarchy.

Maslow’s hierarchy is described as follows:

1. Physiolonical needs - food, sleep and air.

2. Safety- security and protecton.

3. Belonninn and love includinn - defciency and selfsh takinn instead of nivinn, and unselfsh love
that is based upon nrowth rather than defciency.

4. Needs for self-esteem- self-respect, positve feelinns about yourself.

5. Creatve self-nrowth - fulflment of potental and meaninn in life.

Additonally, there is another factor which could afect the development of the self-esteem is the
eno identty, this when the individual develops somethinn called eno. This is a quiet useful factor as it
allows the individual to experience a taste of them and actually develop their personal opinion about
themselves. You can reconnise someone with too much eno, they would usually arnue on protectnn
their point and they would tend to arnue tll the other person nives up acceptnn their point of view.

One of the last factors which may afect the development of the self-esteem is the social identty;
this is when the individual has a certain level of socialisaton. For example, is the individual always
socialises they would have a hinher self-esteem than those who barely communicate at all. Someone
who communicates a lot will have a hinher self-esteem because they will have the idea that people
