Why had York triumphed by 1460?
Margaret of Anjou

cause.
 Due to parliament of devils
 Criticised for not taking action when York was in Ireland acting as if he
ruled the area.
 Earl of Wiltshire was made lieutenant of Ireland in December 1459, and
nothing was being done to enable him to take up his post in replacing
York.
 Allowed York to lick his wounds and plot his return to England again.
Warwick
 Kingmaker
 Crucial in transforming Yorkists fortune in 1460.
 He was the Captain of Calais and replaced Somerset before the ludford
bridge battle, somerset tried to take it back but failed.
 Warwick was kept informed of somersets actions by people in Kent and
was made aware that a large fleet of ships were being made to attack
Calais.
 Warwick captured fleet and took it to Calais.
 He then went for 2 months to Ireland to confer with York, the
Lancastrians could have taken Calais, but they lacked the money and
strength so when Warwick returned everything was okay.
 Next move was to begin Yorkist invasion by capturing the town of
sandwich in June 1460.
 Warwick got Yorkists in a strong position and gained more supporters
they were ready to meet Lancastrians once more in battle.
Battle of Northampton 10 July 1460
 Yorkists reached Northampton on the 10th of July 1460 led by march and
Warwick.
 Attempted to negotiate with Lancastrians but Buckingham rejected.
 Yorkists triumphed as heavy rain made Lancastrians gun failed to fire
 Lord grey of Ruthin (a Lancastrian) defected to the Yorkists side secretly
Warwick knew this and told his men no to fire to those wearing a grey
badge.
