Teacher Language

i ELICITING THE TARGET LANGUAGE FROM THE CONTEXT
Teacher: Okay, class are you ready for our lesson today?
Students: Yes.
Teacher: Okay let’s start! (Ask students what are their thoughts about the picture)
Can you guess what he is thinking? (referring to picture on the board)
Students: Yes.
Teacher: What is it?
Student 1: To pass the exam.
Teacher: Good Xien! Anything else?
Student 2: Going to university.
Teacher: Excellent Lao!
Xien: I want to go to university too.
Teacher: Cool! What you will do if you want to go to University?
Xien: If I pass my exams.
Teacher: Great! What else do you need to do so you can go to University?
Ken: If I study hard, I’ll go to university.
Teacher: Very good! Now, if you were the kid on that picture, what else would you like to think?
Student 3: If I finish my homework early, I will play with my friends.
Teacher: Great! What else?
Student 4: If I read my books, I will learn more.
Teacher: Perfect! So now let’s look at an example.
(write on the board “If Xien passes his exam, He’ll go to university.”)
Can this happen?
Students: Yes!
Teacher: Does it mean Xien will surely go to university?
Students: No!
Teacher: That’s right, but passing his exams is a very likely thing that can happen.
Can anyone tell me what conditional are these examples on the board?
Students: First Conditional.
Teacher: Excellent! This is what we called First Conditional. We use the first conditional to talk
about things that might happen in the future. It’s not 100% sure but there is a big
chance that it will happen.
Teacher: Here I am saying it is possible that Xien will go to university on the condition of passing
his exams.

Teacher: Does anyone know the name of this conditional again?
Students: First Conditional.
Teacher: Well done! (write the name of the conditional at the top of the board)
*If I cannot elicit these answers from the students, I will tell them.
ii) ELICITING THE FORM

Teacher: Now let's look at the form then.
(Writes on the board)
“If Xien passes his exam, He’ll go to university.”
Teacher: Xien, what is the use of first conditional?
Xien: We use first conditional to talk about possible situations in the future.
Teacher: Excellent Xien! The first conditional has two clauses, (writes on the board)
“IF CLAUSE, + RESULT CLAUSE”
So the form is IF + any present tense + any future tense.
However, in this lesson, we will only look at the present simple and future simple using
WILL because these two tenses are the most common in the first conditional.
Teacher: What are the most common tenses in the first conditional again?
Lao: Present simple and future simple.
Teacher: Exactly! For example,
IF XIEN PASSES HIS EXAM, HE’LL GO TO UNIVERSITY.
What is the first condition or the “if clause”?
Students: If Xien passes his exam.
Teacher: That’s right. (writes “if clause” below the sentence “If Xien passes his exam”)
Okay, we need a main clause in order to complete the sentence and that is our RESULT
CLAUSE. What is it?
Students: He’ll go to University.
Teacher: Excellent! (writes “result clause” below the sentence “He’ll go to university”)
Teacher: Now keep in mind that in the RESULT, the subject will sometimes get contracted with
the helping verb “will”. Also, be mindful of the punctuation because if the condition
comes before the result, then we need a comma to separate the two clauses.
(writes formation for affirmative form on the board)
“IF + SIMPLE PRESENT , WILL + VERB”
Teacher: What is the form again?
Students: If + present simple, will + verb
