Rough outline of the story:
● We are informed of the place the poem takes place in.
● We are informed about the problem - rat infestation.
● Townsfolk taking action and threatening the mayor and
corporation
● Mayor and corporation holding a meeting
● Appearance of the pied piper
● We learn of his abilities and his terms for removing the rats
● How he gets rid of the rats - and how they drown in the Weser
● The one rat who managed to escape - tells his tale in ‘Ratland’
for the his remaining years
● Hamelin rejoicing and banishing all traces of the rats
● The pied piper asking for his 1000 guilders
● The mayor and corporation being greedy and giving him only 50
● The piper warning them
● The mayor, true to character, refusing to acknowledge the
warning
● The piper luring the children away through the portal in the
mountain side
● One child with the lame foot remains behind, and lives in woe for
the rest of his days - talking of the enchanted and magical land
the piper had promised him.
