CCD and CMOS Questions and Answers Rated A+
CCD and CMOS Questions and Answers Rated A+ What are CCDs? What are CMOS? CCDs are Charged-Coupled Devices that are used in digital video cameras, space telescopes, and other applications. The people who invented them, George Smith and Willard Boyle won a Nobel Prize for it. CMOS sensors are also used in cameras, but no one has won a Nobel Prize for inventing them yet. What does CCD stand for? Charge-Coupled Device What does CMOS stand for? Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor What do CMOS and CCDs do? How? After light enters the camera through the lens, these devices capture the image by acting like solar array (panels) to make light into electricity, just in lower voltages. Where does the CCD and CMOS located inside the camera? they are located at the focal plane, the point inside the camera where the light that passes through the lens is focused because if it was at the back there is no image there and in the front, the image won't be in focus to see. Light passes through the lens to the focal plane where the CCD collects the light. The distance between the end of the lens and the focal plane is called the focal length. How is the image collected? On the front of the CCD or CMOS there are microscopical division of cells. As the light from the image hits each cell, the cell generates electric current.. How much current depends on how bright the light is.... the brighter the light the stronger the current What is the difference between CMOS and CCDs? Who won the fight? Today CMOS sensors are used instead of CCDs because they are cheaper to manufacture. Both do the same basic job of turning light images into electrical signals and both have their strengths and weaknesses. CCDs were considered better for videographers who will willing to spend more, but after phones had cameras CMOS were used and enhanced to be almost as good as the CCDs. So, CMOS are used because they are cheaper and just as good.
