Week 3: The effects of group centrality and accountability on conformity to cyber
aggressive norms: Two messaging app experiments ( Bleize)
The two experiments conducted in this study aimed to investigate the effects of group
centrality and accountability on conformity to cyber aggressive norms in messaging apps. The
experiments involved early adolescents and utilized a scripted WhatsApp conversation where
participants judged the appropriateness of cyber aggressive behaviors after viewing ostensible
peers' responses.

Experiment 1 (N = 233) and Experiment 2 (N = 296) replicated the results, showing that
accountability had a significant effect on conformity to cyber aggressive norms. Participants
who did not believe they had to discuss their responses in class conformed more to these
norms compared to those who believed they had to discuss their responses. However, there
was no significant effect of group centrality or the moderating effects of susceptibility to peer
pressure on conformity.

The findings suggest that increasing accountability in messaging apps may be an effective
strategy for reducing conformity to cyber aggression. The study extends existing conformity
research to messaging apps and highlights the importance of understanding the psychological
determinants of conformity in order to develop interventions to reduce cyber aggression.

The effects of group centrality and accountability on conformity to cyber aggressive norms
were investigated in two experiments. The first experiment involved 233 participants, while
the second experiment involved 296 participants. The results of both experiments showed that
accountability had a significant effect on conformity to cyber aggressive norms. Participants
who believed they did not have to discuss their responses in class conformed more to these
norms compared to those who believed they had to discuss their responses. However, there
was no significant effect of group centrality or the moderating effects of susceptibility to peer
pressure on conformity. These findings suggest that increasing accountability in messaging
apps may be an effective strategy for reducing conformity to cyber aggression.

Increasing accountability in messaging apps can help reduce conformity to cyber aggression
by making individuals more aware of their actions and the potential consequences. When
individuals feel accountable for their behavior, they are more likely to think critically about
their actions and consider the impact on others. This increased awareness can act as a
deterrent to engaging in cyber aggressive behaviors. By creating a sense of responsibility and
accountability to people outside of the messaging group, individuals may be less inclined to
conform to aggressive norms within the group. This can disrupt the group-based process of
conformity and encourage individuals to resist engaging in cyber aggression. Therefore,
increasing accountability in messaging apps can serve as a viable strategy for intervention
efforts to reduce conformity to cyber aggression and promote more positive online
interactions.
