, Task: Write an essay that examines the ways that research into the topic of
well-being can benefit professionals in the workplace and organisations.

Research into the topic of well-being can bring many benefits for professionals and
organisations. Investigating the value of the physical work environment, raising mental health
awareness, promoting personal health practices, creating meaningful work, building resilience,
and encouraging asking for support when needed can improve employee job satisfaction,
commitment and engagement. Further, researching these aspects can increase work
productivity and decrease staff absenteeism and presenteeism. Promoting physical and mental
health and well-being can create positive working environments where individuals and
organisations can succeed.

Research into the value of the physical work conditions can benefit professionals and
organisations. According to Hodgins (2016), the physical environment at work includes “any
structure, machine, substance or process which may have an effect on any aspect of the health
and well-being of workers”. This means that the design and safety of the work settings, as well

employees to stay focused on their work and do their best. This in turn can reduce the risk of

workspace features such as temperature, noise, air quality and lighting can affect the mood,
behaviour, perceptions and productivity of workers. When professionals are comfortable with
their surroundings and not distracted with too much noise or movements around them, for
example, they will be more focused, calm, and happy at work and produce better work
outcomes. A quality physical environment that energises and inspires professionals can help
them feel more creative, engaged, and connected to the organisation they work for.

Research into developing mental health awareness can also benefit professionals and
organisations. Lelliott (2008) states that mental health problems affect workers “by adversely
affecting work performance due to fatigue, poor concentration and memory problems”. This
