Religious Changes
Act of Ten Articles July 1536
• Cromwell behind the production… demonstrated steady move from C to Protestantism
• 4 of the 7 sacraments omitted = suggested Catholic faith was being eroded and was being
discouraged in England
• Placed emphasis on bible and not mass = encouraged carrying out worship yourself
• Encouraged simple Christian existence
• Transubstantiation not referred to = key part of Catholicism not included
Cromwell’s 1st Set of Injunctions August 1536
• Rather vague instructions, but still increasing shift towards Protestantism
• Clergy must defend Royal Supremacy in sermons
• No. of Holy Days reduced + superstitious practices discourages e.g. pilgrimages = affected
everyday common people as holy days/pilgrimages were big part of their lives
The Bishops Book 1537
• Concept of transubstantiation still not referred to
• Made as a second attempt to outline practices of new CofE = another move towards
Protestantism although slightly more conservative
• Purgatory only present by implication
• Downplayed the role of mass + priests and diminished value of 7 sacraments
Cromwell’s Second Set of Injunctions 1538
• Much more specific than 1st set = stronger shift towards Protestantism
• All parishes to have an English bible
• Relics to be removed from Churches
• Candles before images forbidden
The Great Bible April 1539
• Cromwell commission Miles Coverdale to produce a Great Bible in English
• H was drawn as centre of the cover sheet = symbolism of him being most powerful figure
(alluded to)
• C saw this as gateway to Protestantism as more people could read it
• H had reservations concerning rebellions = but C got what he wanted instead
The 6 Articles June 1539
• Called whip with 6 strings as was beating reformists down
• V signifcant as showed halting/even reversal of religious reform
• H showing his underlying Catholic prejudices and that he would not tolerate the extremes of
Protestantism
• Articles stated: transubstantiation DID occur, ons hould confess sins to Priest + no marriage
amongst Clergy
• Showed that ultimately H was in charge… C owed everything to H through patronage so this is
an example of how he couldn’t question his decisions too much
Could argue dissolution of the Monasteries was greatest religious change as was PERMANENT
Could argue Anne played role in encouraging religious changes:
