BPT1501 PORTFOLIO SECOND SEMESTER 2023
1. Read the given scenarios below and indicate whether in each scenario the teacher acted in a professional manner or not? Give three reasons for each scenario to support your stance. (44) Your response should be at most 500 words. Scenarion1 Mr.Z is a newly qualified teacher and he applied for a teaching position at Lotanang secondary school. He attached his SACE conditional registration when applying for the position which was expired. He performed well in the interview and was appointed. A month following his appointment he was requested to submit the renewed SACE certificate. He immediately went to SACE offices to renew his certificate. Since the certificate had expired three months ago, he requested the officials at the SACE office to back date his application to the previous three months to make him have a valid SACE certificate when assuming his position. Scenario 2 Ms. Kijima had been teaching for almost thirty years and a popular coach for several sports. She is well known for her concern for the welfare of her students. Since the high school has limited resources to accommodate practices and games for some of its teams, students are responsible for their own transportation to other sports venues. Consequently, it is not uncommon for Ms. Kijima to provide personal transportation for one or more students to athletic events and back home after events. Scenario 3 Ms Bigmouth was invited to a party in a nearby village. While attending this party with other invited guests, Ms. Bigmouth, a grade 7 math teacher in her school village, complained to a few invited guests about a few difficult learners in her class, identifying them by their names and providing specific details about the learners’ academic record. Ms. Bigmouth says that the guests do not know the learners personally, so there should be no problem discussing the learners and the situation. Scenario 4 Disrespect is a new learner in rural High School from the big city. He has made friends with many staff members and invited them to visit his social network page. On his page, Disrespect has listed quite a bit of personal information. One of his teachers “friended” him on the site and became very concerned because the site included a statement that Disrespect was attracted to lady teachers, stating “the mature the better.” The teacher did nothing about this information. 2. Read the passage below extracted from a website and identify the six roles of a teacher that were played by this teacher. For each role give an example of how the teacher played it. (24) My principal at that time, when he found out I was already hired, he was not happy. When I went to introduce myself, he had said to me, ‘I didn’t hire you. You don’t have a job.’ And every morning he would come to my room, eight o’clock. I would be receiving my children. Lunch time, he would be in my room. It could have stopped me, could have made me bitter. But to me, that’s just a challenge. My first class consisted of 19 boys and one girl. I remember my only little girl came up and she lifted my dress. She wanted to see my slip, because black people were supposed to be dirty, and she was checking it out. And I went to the older Black teachers in the small town, and they gave me some advice as what to do. Treat them as if they are your own children. Little children do not know the difference, and honestly … they didn’t. You have to first see the child as who that child could be. You have to dream for that child. So I stood at the door. And greeted every one. So that I knew if when you were sad. I knew when you needed shoes. I looked at your dress. And I hugged you. I would say to my first grade kids, ‘Let me help you read.’ And at the end of the day, I stood. ‘I miss you. I’m going to need you tomorrow. Will you come? Please be here.’ There’s no colour when you’re learning to read. My kids now, the 19 boys and one girl? Those men come see me now. They come check on me now. 3. Mr Pain is a new student for an online learning course. His last study was 4 years ago and he studied face-to-face. He is finding it difficult to cope up with his studies. He could not submit most of his assignments. His institution has offered all new online students a massive online course. However, Mr Pain did not complete the course. He always blame tutors and course coordinators of not being considerate of him because he is working full time. Mr Pain does not even know who his tutor is. Identify four (5) challenges that Mr Pain is facing in his studies and develop strategies that will assist Mr Pain to overcome his challenges. Mr Phahama is the most extraordinary educator I have ever met in my life. He stressed reading, literature, and comprehension more than anything else and showed his learners how, through sufficient reading abilities, they could teach themselves anything. He ignited a passion for reading in them and showed them a few books that have had a profound impact on their lives. He also was extremely encouraging and was really good at forming relationships with each and every learner in the class. If anyone was ever struggling, he was able to give them the support they needed to understand the concept without neglecting the rest of the class. 4. Read the above given passage and indicate whether you agree or disagree with the author. Give three reasons to support your stance
