Film 1101: Lecture 1
Film studies compares to english literature and how it deconstructs and
analyzes things.
We will be learning how to deconstruct cinematic texts looking at things
like:
-audio\visuals
-how they communicate ideas using a vocabulary of technical
terms
Purpose: gaining a deeper meaning on what cinema is as an art and
cultural artifact.
We look at the positions of films in societies.
-Does it reject values and morals from certain societies?
-Does it depict the world around us?
-Does it propose a better world than what we live in or a worst one?
-Why do filmmakers make these choices? do they have the power to
shape our society or our world?
Ideological film criticism:
the bias’ the attitudes and the beliefs of the filmakes are always present
embedded into what we're watching no matter what type of production it
is whether it is a documentary, true story, etc. The order in which things
are presented are criteria that changes the way you may see or how we
feel about the subject matter.
EX: Filmmakers can take things like schools and depict it as a happy
place where you learn ANOTHER filmmaker may take the same place
