Procedure Steps
Central Line Dressing Change
• Place supplies at bedside
• Perform hand hygiene and don clean glove*
• Raise bed to comfortable working height
• Place client in supine position
• Set up trash receptacle in an accessible location
• Remove client’s gown and any linens near the
central line
• Open central line dressing kit utilizing principles
of sterile technique*
• Don mask; if available, place mask on client; if no
mask available, turn the client’s head away from
insertion site
• Remove dressing and examine site
• Remove gloves over contaminated dressing and
discard appropriately
• Perform hand hygiene*
• Don sterile gloves*
• Cleanse around insertion site and surrounding area
with ChloraPrep protocol*
• Allow area to dry
• Apply BioPatch Antimicrobial dressing per
hospital policy* (if available)
• Apply sterile dressing to cover the insertion site,
sutures, and hub
• Remove gloves and, if necessary, mask from client
• Label dressing with time, date, and initials
• Secure IV tubing
• Replace client’s gown and linens
• Assist client into comfortable position
