In conclusion, the research conducted by Govender, Barnes, and Pieper (2011)
underscores the profound influence of housing and sanitation on public health,
particularly in low-cost housing settlements in South Africa. Their findings
emphasize the pressing need for holistic interventions that encompass housing
quality, sanitation, and hygiene practices to enhance the well-being of urban poor
communities. Neglecting to address these issues may culminate in a burgeoning
health crisis that becomes progressively difficult to manage. DISCURSIVE

, QUESTION ONE – ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

Load shedding, a deliberate and controlled interruption of electricity supply, has
become a persistent issue in Southern Africa, significantly impacting the lives of its
citizens. This essay will delve into three detrimental effects of load shedding on the
people in the region: disruption of business activities, access to medical care, and
education. Additionally, it will propose two potential solutions to mitigate the load-
shedding crisis in Southern Africa.

To begin with, load shedding seriously disrupts business activities. Many small-scale
businesses and enterprises heavily rely on a stable source of electricity to function
effectively. The frequent and prolonged power cuts can result in significant financial
losses, reduced productivity, and even the potential collapse of businesses. As
indicated in Umar and Kunda-Wamuwi's research (2019), the increased demand for
energy in the face of load shedding significantly affects the operations of SMEs,
which are essential economic drivers for many communities.

The second negative impact of load shedding relates to access to medical care.
Hospitals and healthcare facilities require uninterrupted power for various life-saving
equipment, such as life support machines and refrigeration for medicines. Load
shedding jeopardizes patients' lives, particularly in emergencies and surgical
procedures. This situation not only disrupts daily healthcare operations but also
poses a substantial threat to public health and safety. Umar and Kunda-Wamuwi
(2019) emphasize the direct link between blackouts and health outcomes, including
an increased burden on medical staff during surgeries.

The third adverse effect of load shedding concerns education. In the digital age,
electricity is essential for various educational purposes. Students require electricity
for studying, conducting research, and completing assignments. Load shedding
disrupts students' study routines, leading to academic setbacks and potentially
compromising their future prospects. Moreover, educational institutions, from schools
to universities, often rely on technology and electricity for teaching and administrative
purposes. Prolonged power cuts can have severe implications for students'
educational progress.

To address the load-shedding crisis in Southern Africa, two potential solutions
should be considered. Firstly, diversifying energy sources is imperative. Overreliance
