Learning Aim 2: Task 2
Evaluate the influence different stakeholders exert in one organisation.
In this report I will be evaluating the influences that different stakeholder groups have over Tesco
PLC. I will be looking at the Tesco CSR report as well as other reputable media resources in order to
discover which changes have been made as a reflection of the stakeholders’ opinions. It is important
that Tesco responds well to their stakeholders in order to keep the business successful.
Tesco said in their 2012 CSR report that “By operating responsibly and working with customers,
suppliers, expert partners and NGOs our hope is that we can leave the world a better place; a
greener, healthier and more prosperous place than when we began.” This meant that they were
willing to make changes and work responsibly with their stakeholders in order to maintain a healthy
relationship with their stakeholders and keep the business successful. In regards to this, they have a
seven part strategy which “sets out clear goals for the business to ensure we deliver long-term
sustainable growth. Putting our responsibilities to the communities we serve at the heart of what we
do is an essential part of it.” Within this seven step strategy, they work with stakeholders to make
sure they are serving the community to the best of their ability.
Tesco focus on building a good relationship with their employees. Tesco say that they are “proud to
have a diverse business and we have always valued the benefits that diversity brings.” They also
stated in their 2012 CSR report that “since 2007 the number of female Directors at Tesco has
increased by 45, and increase of nearly 76% and women in senior management positions account for
31% across the Group as a whole.” In 2012 there were four women on the PLC Board (29%). By
maintaining a positive relationship with their employees they can continue be a successful business
and gain a good profit. The employees are the face of the business and by maintaining a positive
relationship with them, Tesco are enabling them to have a positive attitude towards work which will
be noticed by all of the customers. Having a positive attitude to work can greatly influence how the
customers feel about shopping there.
Local communities are a large factor within the way Tesco runs. Chief Executive Phillip Clarke said
“I’m determined that every Tesco store and every Tesco business is valued and trusted by local people
because we do the right thing. I believe that our half a million people around the world truly can
make a difference to the communities we live and work in.” This shows that they are fully aware of
the impact that the local communities can have on them and they always try to ensure that they are
having positive light shone upon them from the local community. The local community have a large
influence over the way the business runs and the decisions they make. They also provided a list of 5
community promises. These were: Buying and selling our products responsibly; caring for the
environment; providing customers with healthy choices; actively supporting local communities;
creating good jobs and careers. By making these promises they are responding to what the local
community wants. These promises were proof to the community that their voices are being heard
and their concerns are important to Tesco.
Tesco responds well to the customers opinions. They are aware of the role the customers have in
helping the business get a good income and remain successful, so they hold events to keep customers
involved and they bring out new ranges to keep their customers healthy and satisfied. ” We recognise
our role in helping customers to lead healthy lives. We are developing more healthy products, such as
our US eat well range and our Goodness range for children in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
Millions of people get active through our sporting events including our record breaking aerobics
programme in Thailand. Nearly a million children benefit from our FA skills football programme and
hundreds of thousands of women keep fit by running Race for Life each year, raising money to fight
