Reflecting according to the STARRT Methodology
Step 1 Situation:
Tell as accurately as possible about a situation you have experienced regarding the relevant practical
assignment. Topics to address:
− What was the situation?
− Who were involved?
− Where did it take place? Etc.
Step 2 Tasks:
Tell as accurately as possible what your tasks, assignments, roles, responsibilities, and authorities
were in the situation. Topics to address:
− What was your goal?
− What was your intention?
− What was expected of you in this situation?
− What did you need to do? Etc.
Step 3 Actions:
Tell as accurately as possible how you approached it. Topics to address:
− What did you actually do?
− What were you thinking?
− What did you envision?
− What was your exact contribution or input? Etc.
Step 4 Results:
Tell as accurately as possible what the result of your action was. Topics to address:
− What was the consequence of your action?
− What was the result in that situation? Etc.
Step 5 Reflection:
Tell as accurately as possible how you look back on the situation. Topics to address:
− What conclusions do you draw from it?
− What have you learned from it and what will you do with it?
− What does this say about your mastery of your professional competence in this situation?
Etc.
Step 6 Transfer:
Tell as accurately as possible to what extent you would apply what you have learned in another
situation/context. Topics to address:
− In what way would you apply what you have learned in another situation?
