It is a natural process that is necessary for optimal health It involves a shift in physiological and neurological activity It is intended to be a restorative process Normal Physiological Process Under normal circumstances it occurs in stages, in a fairly consistent pattern Two major Categories Non-Rapid Eye movement Rapid Eye Movement Non-Rapid Eye Movement has Four Stages Stage 1 – Light sleep, person can be awakened easily Can drift in and out of sleep hallucinations can occur Uncontrolled muscle jerks can occur Stage 2 – Eye movement ceases Brain waves become even slower Pulse rate and respirations slow down and body temperature drops. Stage 3 – Deep sleep characterized by very slow brain waves called Delta Waves Delta Waves are smaller and faster waves Stage 4 – Exclusively Delta Waves During this stage it can be difficult to wake Muscle Activity is very limited or completely absent REM – Rapid Eye movement sleep Commonly begins approx. 90 minutes after onset of sleep. May last as long as 30 minutes to 1 hour Autonomic response of rapid eye movement Fluctuating Heart Rate and Respiratory Rates and increase fluctuating blood pressure Brain Activity is similar to those when a person is awake but muscles are paralyzed, which prevents movement.
