Dryness in vaginal area, vaginal itchiness, and hot flashes Climateric - Transitional phase during which ovarian function and hormone production decline Spans the years from onset of premenopausal ovarian decline to postmenopausal time, when symptoms stop. Average age is 51 Menopause - Refers to the last menstrual period Dated with certainty 1 year after menstruation ceases Average age 51.4 years old Range of ages 35 to 60 years old Infertility - When you can't get pregnant even after a year of trying Hysterosalpingography - Checks for tubal patency, uterine abnormalitiesT Test for male infertility - Hormonal factors Testicular factors: Sperm not viable Factors associated with sperm transport Idiopathic male infertility Test for female infertility - Test or examination Evaluation of the anatomy Detection of ovulation-predictor kit, BBT (basal body temp: take to see when you're ovulating) Hormone analysis-FSH Ultrasonography Endometrial biopsy Laparoscopy Assessment of male infertility - Semen analysis-(to check to see if sperm is doing okay) Hormone analysis Scrotal ultrasound (check to make sure anatomy is doing okay) Calendar rhythm method - Infertile before and after ovulation, fertile about 5 to 7 days (ovulation) in the middle of the cycle, low cost, strict record keeping You can look at cervical mucus. Mucus gets more stringy, stretchy, and more amounts during ovulation. Approved by the Roman Catholic Church Recommended for a monogamous married couple Women must have regular menstrual cycle Must plot menstrual cycle 6 months in advance prior of wanting to prevent Basal body temperature method - Drop in temperature when ovulating. You take your temperature every morning before you get out of bed and chart to see when your temperature drops Cervical mucous ovulation detection - Wet, slippery clear mucus with ovulation Symptothermal method - Combines BBT with cervical mucous Decrease birth control and will need a backup method - -Anti seizure medications, antibiotic, barbituits Mini-pill - Estrogen/progesterone based pill Side effects of IUDs - Increased risk of PID, irregular bleeding, can be dislodged. Not super common however. Family History - Go back three generations Genes that make up genome or genomics - 30,000-40,000 genes Autosomal abnormalities - Abnormalities of the chromosome number Ex: Down syndrome-Trisomy 21 Abnormalities of the chromosomal structure - Translocation-exchange of chromosomal material
