Welding Safety Trade Terms with verified correct definitions.
Area Safety The upkeep of a safe working environment through the implementation of good housekeeping, area awareness, and making others aware of hazards. SDS A document that contains information on the potential health effects of exposure to chemicals, or other potentially dangerous substances, and on safe working procedures when handling chemical products. PPE Protective clothing, helmets, goggles, or other garments or equipment designed to protect the wearer's body from injury or infection. The hazards addressed by protective equipment include physical, electrical, heat, chemicals, bio-hazards, and airborne particulate matter. Electrically grounded Connected to earth or to some conducting body that serves in place of the earth. Fire Retardant A substance that reduces flammability of fuels or delays their combustion. Hot work permit A signed document required to perform any process that can be a source of ignition when flammable material is present or can be a fire hazard regardless of the presence of flammable material in the workplace. Fire watch A dedicated person or persons whose sole responsibility is to look for fires within an established area. Fume Plume A gas shield or fumes that result from welding or cutting processes. Purging Gas An inert gas (argon,nitrogen) used to displace potentially flammable or explosive gas, or displace oxygen for welding operations. Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) Exposure to airborne contaminants that is "likely to cause death or immediate or delayed permanent adverse health effects or prevent escape from such an environment. Source Fume Extraction Removal of potentially harmful contaminants in the air through a portable ventilation system which must be placed in close proximity to the fume source. Air-Purifying Respirator A respirator with an air-purifying filter, cartridge, or canister that removes specific air contaminants by passing ambient air through the air-purifying element Supplied-Air Respirator A respirator that is connected to an outside source for fresh air supply.
