Both Pendleside Hospice and Tesco use internal and external sources when
recruiting for new employees. There are various possible reasons for this, one
of these could be that they need maternity cover in which they will need
someone to cover a member of staff that works there full-time who has taken
leave. Another reason might be that they need seasonal staff, in which certain
times are the year are busier than normal such as the Christmas period where
there is a constant number of customers entering the store and the business
will need to be assisted so that it can operate efficiently. Finally, another
reason for wanting to employ more people might be that the business is being
more successful and is growing, thus they have the finances to be able to hire
more people offering various roles, or some employees may have chosen to
leave therefore they need full-time staff to continue to operate efficiently.
Pendleside Hospice do things in a different way as to how Tesco would by
advertising in the local area within public buildings such as doctors, hospitals,
churches, colleges etc. They advertise using social media and posters along
with other low costs methods trying to convince people that keeping money
with them is a sensible thing to do.
An efficient way of keeping costs down in areas of a business where full-time
workers are not needed is employing part-time workers. This means that a
business can attract a wide variety of people to fill vacancies within the
business and remove the need for full-time cover. It also allows a business to
become more flexible depending on if there are any changes in demand and
how fast the business is growing, or in worse cases, underperforming and
shrinking. At the end of the financial year, a business completes an annual
count in which it calculates how much money a company has gained or lost.
This will allow a business to decide whether they can afford to keep part-time
staff or if they can afford to hire new employees.
In previous years, there will have been may factors that have determined
whether both Pendleside Hospice and Tesco have recruited new staff, however
these factors would be different for both businesses. One of the main factors
for Tesco would be cost. This is because Tesco is much larger than Pendleside
Hospice and will have more money to spend on employing people in different
departments. However, in some circumstances, one of Tesco’s departments
may not be performing as well in a certain month and Tesco might make the
decision to drop staff or move them to a different department as they are
simply not able to fund having those staff in that department. As mentioned
earlier, Tesco may choose to recruit more coming up to or during seasonal
