Combining pure oxygen with a burning material causes a fire to flare and burn out of control. When a cutting job is completed and the oxyfuel equipment is no longer needed the first step in shutting down the oxyfuel cutting equipment is to close the fuel gas cylinder valve. When cutting thin steel with oxyfuel cutting equipment, hold the torch so that the tip is pointing in the direction the torch is traveling at a 15 to 20 degree angle. On a combination cutting torch, the primary fuel gas and oxygen valves are located on the torch handle. An oxyfuel cutting torch should be checked for leaks each time it is used. Safety fuse plugs in the top and bottom of an acetylene cylinder are designed to release acetylene gas in event of a fire. Before cutting or welding containers purge them with a flow of inert gas. The hoses used to carry oxygen from the cylinder to the torch are usually green A cutting flame that has an excess of oxygen is called an Oxidizing flame The regulators used on oxygen cylinders are often painted, green and always have right-hand threads on all connections. The selection of a cutting torch tip depends on the thickness of the base metal being cut and the kind of fuel gas being used. The process of cutting a groove into a surface is known as gouging. A track burner is a device used to cut or bevel a straight line The fuel gas regulators high- pressure gauge usually reads up to 400 psi. For long term cutting of materials containing cadmium or mercury, always wear an approved supplied- air respirator When acetylene gas is combined with oxygen during oxyfuel cutting activities, the acetylene causes the flame to burn hotter than 5,500F If a high volume gas is removed from a liquefied gas cylinder, the pressure drops and the temperature of the cylinder also drops When welding wear high-top safety boots at least 8" tall. When used in oxyfuel cutting, propylene mixtures burn at temeperatures around 5,193F In the top and bottom of the acetylene cylinder are safety plugs with melting point of 220F When an empty cylinder has been removed from the workstation and stored, it must be marked MT near its top. As a reminder that the regulator on a cylinder has left-handed a v-notch is sometimes cut around the nut. Methylacetylene propadiene gas is a combination of acetylene and propane.
