What is measurement?

• Measurement is rules for assigning numbers to objects (concepts) in such a way as to
represent quantities of attributes.

– E.g., IQ = 75 vs IQ = 145

• Assumption: we can know what reality is really like

• Four processes:

– Conceptualisation

– Operationalisation

– Reliability

– Validity

Conceptualisation

• First, define what it is you want to study.

– E.g., Positive parenting of young children:

• Supporting positive behavior

• Setting limits

• Proactive parenting

– McEachern, A.,D., Dishion, T.J., Weaver, C.M., Shaw, D.S., Wilson,
M.N., & Gardner, F. (2012). Parenting Young Children (PARYC):
Validation of a self-report parenting measure. Journal of Child and
Family Studies, 21(3): 498-511. doi: 10.1007/s10826-011-9503-y

Operationalisation

• Translate the concept into a plan for measurement:

• Supporting positive behaviour:

– How often in the past _______ did you:

• Notice and praise your child’s good behavior?

• Teach your child new skills?

• Setting limits:

– How often in the past _______ did you:

• Stick to your rules and not change your mind?

• Tell your child how you expected him or her to behave?
