Essence of the Reading and Writing Portions - ANSWER-Authors make use of support—details, examples, reasons, facts, figures, and so on—to help make their ideas compelling, their points clear, and their claims convincing. Command of Evidence Section consists of - ANSWER-questions that circulate around the ways in which authors use evidence to support Types of Command of Evidence Questions - ANSWER-determining best evidence, interpreting data, understanding how an argument uses evidence, and improving a passage's structure Amount of Command of Evidence questions - ANSWER-10 in the Reading Test and 8 in the Writing and Language Test COMMAND OF EVIDENCE: Determining the Best Evidence - ANSWER-SAT will ask a question and then ask another question asking which piece of evidence best supports your answer Best Approach: 1) Read and answer the previous question. This question usually asks for you to draw a reasonable conclusion or inference from the passage 2) Choose which line from the passage, whether it be a fact, date, small piece of information, etc., best defends your answer. Answering, "How do I know my answer in the last question was correct?" Notes: It could be that looking at the Command of Evidence makes you reconsider your initial choice. That is OK but make sure you aren't second-guessing yourself or overthinking the problem. COMMAND OF EVIDENCE: Interpreting Data in Information Graphics - ANSWER-Some of the passages are accompanied by one or two informational graphics, such as tables, graphs, or charts. These graphics represent numerical data that correlates to the reading passage it accompanies. The types of questions regarding these graphics ask you to interpret the data in the graph or draw connections between the graphic and the passage. On the Writing and Language portion, you may be asked to correct an error in the writer's interpretation of the data or make a general statement of the writer more concise by backing it up with numerical data.
