Introduction
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is on the rise globally. CKD affects every race and
nationality with marked mortality rates. With no cure in site, it is vital to improve the outcome of
the individuals affected by CKD. Improving chronic kidney disease in adults will assist in
bridging the gap between the patient and the health care system. With proper education,
preventative healthcare, and lifestyle changes improving CKD will develop an increased quality
of life in adult patients.
Phenomenon of Interest
Chronic kidney disease transpires when the kidneys are damaged and no longer filter
blood appropriately. Damage may occur due to trauma, high blood pressure, and high blood
sugar. Toxins, waste, and fluid accumulate in the kidneys due to the damage that has occurred.
CKD may advance to end-stage renal disease or renal failure and death. This leads to further
damage in major organ systems of the body. The progression of CKD may lead the individual to
needing dialysis and kidney transplant. If the individual cannot receive a kidney transplant, death
is inevitable. Primary care, outpatient, acute care, and renal specialist can decrease the rate of
CKD in the adult population. Healthcare providers can assist in combating the development of
CKD in individuals. With preventative testing, proper education, and an established rapport will
lead to the individual having more control over the disease process. The healthcare provider will
provide education on lifestyle and diet modifications need to decrease the rate of damage to the
kidneys. Preventative testing such as creatinine levels and glomerular filtration rate will assist
with identifying individuals at an increased risk of developing CKD [CITATION Dia18 \l 1033 ].
