The Communicator 2.0: Video Interaction: Client Comfort and End-of-Life Care
ATI REFLECTION
By watching this clinical scenario, it enhanced my understanding by seeing how the nurse
and the family were interacting with the patient. The daughters of the patient could not come to
an agreement on the mother’s care, and the nurse mediated the situation and made many
therapeutic responses when she was in the patient’s room. Whenever you are with a patient, you
should always use therapeutic communication to help them feel at ease and more comfortable.
The patient would feel more comfortable if you let them decide on situations, or in the case of
Mrs. Longley, letting her decide whether or not she wanted pain medication. She was also
uncomfortable by the noise of her grandchildren and wanted to rest. One daughter was not
willingly for her mother to take the medication because she was afraid her mother would not
wake up. She was also reluctant in her going into hospice. Before walking into a patient’s room,
it’s always a good idea to understand how your patient communicates before making any
assumptions. The key to a successful nurse is having great communications skills, effective
therapeutic responses, and always listen.
According to the State Board of Nursing in your state, what is the Registered Nurses
responsibility in treating a patient’s pain?
The goal of pain management is to therapeutically treat the patient's pain in relation to
overall health, including physical function, psychological, social and work-related factors. A
Registered nurse’s responsibility in regard to treating a patient’s pain includes them having an
ethical responsibility to relieve pain and the suffering it causes. Nurses also treat patients on an
individualized nursing intervention plan specific to that patient and the pain they’re experiencing
