TEACHERS OF TOMORROW LESSON PLAN FORMAT SUBJECT/GRADE: 9 CERTIFICATION AREA: ELA SUBMISSION # 1 TNT 700.3P - PLANNING LESSONS, PART 1 TEXAS ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Using the TEKS for your grade level and content area, copy the TEKS word for word. This must include the grade level, number and letter of competency. For example, (Grade 6) 5.B. (Grade 9) (5) Response skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple text. The student responds to an increasingly challenging variety of sources that are read, heard, or viewed. The student is expected to: (A) describe personal connections to a variety of sources, including self-selected texts. PERFORMANCE MEASURE/ASSESSMENT After the lesson, how will you know if they have learned the content to the level of rigor required? How will you measure their performance? Students will write responses (sentence stems provided by the teacher) that describe their personal connections to a self-selected text. Students will select a book of their own interest at choice before presenting the title to the class. Students will explain what personal connection made them to choose this text. Students will complete teacher-provided sentence stems that demonstrate text title, author, topic, genre, and reasons for choosing the text. Students will be handed a rubric that includes these criteria. LEARNING OBJECTIVE(S): Copy the TEKS word for word beginning with “the student is expected to. . .” and the text of the student expectation. Then end your learning objective by stating the performance measure. The student is expected to describe personal connections to a book of their choice (a variety of sources, including a self-selected text) by completing sentence stems responding to increasingly challenging sources that are read, heard, or viewed explaining why they selected a book in five sentences that demonstrate the text title, author, topic, genre and reasons for their selection. OBJECTIVE STATEMENT (must include performance measure) This is what the teacher says to students about what students will learn today, and how they will show they have learned the content (that is the performance measure) Today, class, we will be learning how to respond to a text that we may read. You will, first, select a book of your choice from my bookshelf and I will allow you two minutes to read the summary of the book. Then in your own words, you will be expected to write at least five sentences explaining what the text is about and what type of personal connection, if any, you had with the book. I will give you all up to fifteen minutes of writing time before we all come back together as a class and start reading your sentences to the class. I will have you come up to the front of the room, take up the rubric I’ve provided you so I am able to provide you with an overall score based on your writing. PURPOSE OF LEARNING Why do students need to learn this today? This should be written in what you will say to students and should address both why it is important to the content area (knowledge and skills statement) and why it is relevant in their lives. Being able to read a summary of text and expected to writ at least five sentences about any connection we may have had with our choice of book as well as
