QUESTION 1
1.1 Incidental learning involves using naturally occurring opportunities and interactions with the
environment to teach skills, provide information, and increase a desired behaviour (Study guide for
HLT3701).
Briefly explain how you would facilitate the learning of the four language skills incidentally by
creating a language-rich classroom for Grade R learners. Discuss at least THREE (3) activities that you
would do in your Grade R class.
ANSWER:
Creating a language-rich classroom for Grade R (preschool) learners involves immersing them in a
stimulating environment where they can naturally develop their language skills through various activities.
Here are three activities that can facilitate the incidental learning of the four language skills (listening,
speaking, reading, and writing) in such a classroom:
1. Storytelling Corner: Set up a cozy corner in the classroom dedicated to storytelling. Fill it with
colorful and engaging storybooks appropriate for their age group. During designated times, read
aloud to the students, encouraging them to listen attentively. After reading, engage in discussions
about the story, asking open-ended questions that prompt them to express their thoughts and
opinions. This activity not only enhances their listening skills but also nurtures their speaking skills
as they participate in discussions.
2. Themed Play Stations: Create different play stations related to specific themes (e.g., a pretend
grocery store, a doctor's clinic, a post office). Each station should have props and materials that
encourage imaginative play. As the children engage in role-playing, they naturally practice their
speaking skills by communicating with their peers using appropriate vocabulary and sentence
