their first impression not only of you, but also of your agency and law
enforcement as a profession.
-preparation (Attitude) - -(Mental Preparation) Developing a positive
attitude prior to going on patrol is a key element in job satisfaction. Proper
job performance, mental sharpness, and a reduction in stress levels are all
the positive side effects of a positive attitude.
-Weapon - -When you look yourself over, make a habit to see if your
weapon is in its holster and your back up weapon (if permitted by agency
policy) is secured in its holster as well. Your weapon systems should be
properly maintained, cleaned and serviced. Your weapons need regular
maintenance even if they have not been recently fired.
-Holster - -Inspect your holster for damage and to ensure it functions
properly. If your holster is damaged it could impede drawing your defensive
sidearm under stressful conditions. Further, know how your holster functions.
This muscle memory must be developed for time of extreme stress.
Remember, during critical incidents we will revert to our lowest level of
