• Define Amputation, purposes of amputation.
• List indications of amputation and different
amputation sites.
• Explain the diagnostic procedures for
amputation and nursing care.
• Prepare Nursing care plan for patients with
amputation.
• Describe complications of amputation.

• Amputation is the removal of body part
usually an extremity.
• Amputation is used to relieve symptoms,
improve function, and save or improve the
patient’s quality of life.
• The site of amputation is determined by
two factors: Circulation in the part and
functional usefulness(i-e meets the
requirements of a prosthesis).

Upper extremity amputations include:
1. Above the elbow amputation.
2. Below the elbow amputation.
3. Wrist disarticulation. Term used for an
amputation through the joint
4. Shoulder disarticulation.
5. Finger amputation.
