, Investigating the impact of a positive psychology module on subjective happiness: a single-
case report.
Abstract
In this single-case study, the PSY317 Positive Psychology module as an intervention for
participant’s subjective happiness was evaluated. Vagal function can be improved upon through
greater connection to the self, others, and nature, as shown in the GENIAL model (Kemp et al.,
2017; Mead et al., 2019, 2021); PSY317 involves the implementation of PPIs in these key areas to
improve upon student’s happiness and wellbeing. In this study, a 21-year-old female psychology
undergraduate student under the PSY317 module took up the PPIs of swimming, being kind and
meditation in nature, to connect to the self, others, and nature, respectively. A repeated measures
design was used, with results from SPC analysis indicating sustained increase in subjective
happiness; special cause variation was found throughout intervention and follow-up phases. It was
concluded that PSY317 was successful as an intervention in happiness, highlighting the importance
of positive psychology in wellbeing science. Future research is discussed.
