® ENGLISH GCSE – OF MICE & MEN

George
® George is a small, wiry & wild hustler who’s quick on his feet and sharp
to boot. George finds himself incapable of abandoning Lennie and
leaving his exposed to the cruelties of the world.
® Every character in the novel represents a type of person and George
represents the ‘everyday man’ but he’s slightly different from every
other man in the sense that he has a dream that he’s willing to work
towards unlike all the other men that go to the whore house when
their pay slip comes in George saves up
® George, unlike Lennie does progress throughout the novel though
and takes responsibility for Lennie and his actions. He also progresses
in the sense he starts to buy into the dream more and realise this isn’t
just a dream and could actually be reality

QUALITIES:
Smart:
® George is a reasonably smart man and is clever in the sense that he
always finds work for him and Lennie.
® We know they get kicked off ranches or are forced to leave because
of Lennie’s actions and George seems to know where to go next. In
some aspects George isn’t smart academically, we can tell from the
way he speaks, and his bad English denotes a lack of education but
that would’ve been normal in 1930s America if we assume George
was from a poor background.
® George’s character has developed enough and is smart enough to
realise at the end of the novel that the dream won’t come true, at
least not with Lennie around and so he has to kill Lennie which
demonstrates his unholy care for him as he does it in the most loving
way so that Lennie is happy when he dies.
® George is the only one affected by Lennie’s death showing the
harshness and brutality of companionship in 1930s America.

Loyal:
® George is Lennie’s carer and instructor in the novel. He tells Lennie
what to do, how to do it and how to behave.
® He tries his best to help Lennie stay out of trouble and tries his best to
sort things out and make sure his friend is always safe as he knows
Lennie relies on him hence why George can never leave.
® George does defy his loyalty throughout the play when he becomes
frustrated and constantly tests Lennie by saying he’s better off alone
