Counseling Advocacy with Diverse Populations: Case Analysis: Carter Family
Identifying Characteristics The Carter's are a multiracial family. Sarah, a mother of James, is African American. She is proud of her culture but not fond of some social nuisance, i.e., hip-hop, gangs. Raymond, a father of James, is Caucasian. His attention towards race comes second, as his family comes first. James, who is the only child, is mixed of African American and Caucasian descent. However, James is presently identifying himself with his African American Culture. James is in an identity crisis. His father is in a crisis as well, a crisis of development in cultural identity. The most pertinent concerns for this family are communication and understanding of world views. The family members that should be worked on are Raymond and his son, James, individually and collectively in conjunction with the racial and cultural identity development model (R/CID). Sarah does need counseling as well, which she is already receiving. However, the issues that she faces, for instance, with her son, can be settled in a moment of a reassuring conversation with her son.
