Pharmacology - the study of drugs and their effect on the human body therapeutic effects - positive effects drugs have on the body; intended effects side or adverse effects - negative effects drugs have on the body; unintended effects Name the different body systems that drugs are organized by: - - Neurological - Musculoskeletal - Respiratory - Cardiovascular - Hematologic - Reproductive/Genitourinary - Endocrine - Immune - Pain/Inflammation - Anti-infectives (antibiotics, anti-virals, anti-fungals, etc.) contraindications - a condition or factor that serves as a reason to withhold a certain medical treatment due to the harm that it would cause the patient; drugs providers should not prescribe because they have potential to cause serious or life-threatening adverse effects precautions - a measure taken in advance to prevent something dangerous, unpleasant, or inconvenient from happening when taking/administering drugs drug interactions - a situation in which a substance (usually another drug or food) affects the activity of a drug when both are taken together drug-food interaction - when a certain food changes the way a drug affects the body resulting in increased or decreased levels of drug in the body - grapefruit juice + drug = increase - spinach (vitamin k) + warfarin (blood thinner) = decrease drug-drug interactions - when one drug changes the way another drug affects the body additive effect - when the combined effect of two drugs you give together is the same as each drug you give alone in similar doses; 1+1=2 (ex. alcohol + opiates)
