PHI 105 Topic 5 Assignment Thinking and Language Reflection Worksheet Grand Canyon
a) How do individuals acquire and develop language? There are many ways that an individual acquires language. As humans, we are exposed to language from before we exit the womb. Studies have shown that a fetus reacts to the sounds of its external environment. Even though it cannot hear clearly, as all of the sounds are muffled due to the amniotic fluid, it can still recognize the sound of its mother, and it’s father’s voice. Even when music is played while in utero, the babies tend to react to the same songs outside of the uterus. Language is a ways and means to communicate with your external surroundings. Language comes in many forms, which can be broken down into non-verbal and verbal communication. When babies are born their brain is rapidly developing. The more exposed they are to language whether it is tactile, spoken and nonverbal body cues the more they can process information and think on higher levels. Language and thinking correlate as a negative feedback system. You cannot have language without thinking, but you can think without having language as seen in individuals that present with autism.
