BSW4802 Assignment 2 (ANSWERS) 2024 - DISTINCTION GUARANTEED Answers, guidelines, workings and references ....................Mrs. Khoza (Mrs. K.) is a 78-year-old, African woman who lives in a small village outside Nelspruit. About a year ago, her husband died suddenly of a stroke, leaving Mrs. K. to live alone in her home of 52 years. It was the home where she had raised her three children, all of whom graduated from college, have professional careers, and now live in other parts of the country. Her family is a source of pride, and her home has numerous pictures of her children and grandchildren. She gets a pension that assists her to pay the necessary bills and expenditures. About 3 months ago, Mrs. K’s oldest daughter, Vanessa, got a call from one of the neighbours. Vanessa lives a 4-hour drive from her mother and visits her mother once a month. The neighbour stated that Mrs. K. walked to the neighbourhood store in her pyjamas and slippers. Because Mrs. K. has lived in the community for several years, people have been watching out for her since her husband died, and a neighbour gave her a ride back home. Mrs. K was always a lady who dressed impeccably and kept herself busy with knitting for the grandchildren. She also likes to watch television and attend religious activities at church. The neighbourhood is characterised by many older persons, speaking one of the Nguni languages and did not receive the necessary supportive and empowerment centred social services over the past years. The village also does not have the required facilities to assist older persons. A social worker working for the Council for the Aged was contacted by the concerned neighbour to investigate the situation. The organisation has a support group for older persons once a week, but the need to develop a service that can assist older persons with their tasks in their homes are a growing need in this community. The neighbourhood has a library, small shopping centre and public transport. The village also has municipality services like water and electricity. 20 As a result of the call, the social worker went to Mrs. K.’s home for a visit. Mrs. K. had been a cook in a school cafeteria earlier in life and always kept her own kitchen spotless. But now the house was in disarray with several dirty pots and pans scattered throughout different rooms. Mrs K. seemed to be unable to attend to her house and all the responsibilities a big house expected from her. The social worker also contacted the pastor of her church, Rev. Maimane. He stated that Mrs. K. had been walking to church on Sundays, but lately she missed a few services. The social worker needs to do an assessment to determine how she best can help Mrs K. 1.
