In terms of BLS, does CAB stand for? Compression Airway Breathing This is the new order recommended by AHA Steps BLS for adult rescue CAB = Compression Airway Breathing Are you OK? You get AED, you call 911 5 sec check (no more than 10) for pulse and breathing Is agonal breath considered breathing? No. Agonal breaths appear as gasps and drawing in air quickly; mouth open with head and neck moving with the gasps. May appear forceful or weak. May also sound like a snort, snore, or groan Where should you place your hands for Adult CPR and Child CPR ? Both are placing hands (palms) at Middle of the nipple line or lower half of the breast bone What is the classification for child in CPR? What is the proper compression rate in Adult CPR and Child CPR and infant? 100-120 compressions per minute (staying alive song) for both adult and child and infants. Infants= below 1 year (excluding newborns in delivery room) Child = 1 yo to onset of puberty (males = underarm or chest hair; females= breast development); Adults = adolescent and above What is the proper compression depth for Adult CPR and Child CPR and infant? There are some differences for compression depth for Adult and Child and Infant: For infants: 1/3 depth of chest, no more than 1.5 inches (4 cm) For a Child that would be about 1/3 depth of the chest, no more than 2 inches (5 cm) For adults: 2 inches but no more than 2.4 inches (5-6cm) For purposes of CPR, what is the classification for infant? Is the hand placement and compression depth different for infant? birth to 1 year (except for infants in delivery room) Use 2 fingers (instead of the palms)! Placement area is the same (between the nipples and lower area of breast bone) Compression depth is 1.5 inches (No more!) or 1/3 chest depth What is full chest recoil in CPR? Full chest recoil in CPR allows for the heart to fill up fully with blood What does it mean for compressions to be continuous? How do 2 people do chest compressions? Continuous chest compressions should be the goal Minimize interruptions and limit it to no more than 10 secs With 2 people providing chest compressions, each rotating every 2 minutes would be ideal CAB = Compression -Airway - Breath How would you position patient to ensure an open airway? For maintaining an open airway: Head tilt and chin lift IF there is suspected neck injury, you do NOT tilt head, you do a jaw thrust What is the compression to ventilation ratio? Compression to ventilation ratio is the number of compressions to breaths given to the patient For Adult, compression to ventilation ratio is 30:2 For Child and Infant with 1 rescuer, compression to ventilation ratio is 30:2 BUT... For infants and children with 2 rescuers, compression to ventilation ratio is 15:2 How often do you ventilate when an advanced airway when doing CPR? When using and advanced airway, Do NOT stop compressions. As you continue your compressions, you ventilate every 6 seconds (that's total of 10 ventilations per minute) Also Check for rise and fall of the chest When you receive the AED, use it immediately. How do you properly use and AED? Turn on the AED, follow it's instructions. AFTER making sure that everyone of cleared of the AED can you activate it according to its directions. The AED will determine if the patient needs defibrillation. How is the AED integrated into CPR? Continue chest compression as the AED is being delivered to you. Use it immediately Then if the AED states that CPR needs to continue, during the 30:2 compressions to breath, you use the AED during the "breath cycle" Can an AED be used on a person who was submerged in water? Can AED be used on a person lying in the snow? How about if a patient has a hairy chest? Yes, a person previously submerged in water, you wipe the water from the chest and place AED pads as usual. Yes, you can use an AED with a person lying in the snow - clear chest as usual. For a hair chest, you can shave it or place the pads firmly on the chest Are different size AED pads used on adults and children? Yes, pediatric pads are used on children age 8 and younger. If no pediatric pads are available, then you can use adult pads but make sure the pads do not touch. You may also place one the front of the chest and one on the back.
