RE: Research Proposal: A Qualitative Thematic Analysis of the Lived Experiences and
Reported Consequences of Male Victims of Female-Perpetrated Intimate Partner Violence
(IPV).


I am presently affiliated with the University of South Africa (UNISA) as a student researcher. I
have developed a particular interest in the effects of intimate partner violence (IPV) on male
victims as a result of my broad exposure to male victims that reach out for support from the
South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), where I operate as a telephonic
counsellor. Male victims reach out on this platform due to a fear of stigmatization and of not
being able to find support and assistance from others. I have compiled and attached a research
proposal in hopes of elucidating the importance and potential benefits of further research in this
specific field.


There has been a rise in calls to the SADAG call center of males that are victims of IPV at the
hands of their female partners. It has become clear that these males are too ashamed to reach
out for support due to social stigma or fear being judged unfairly by authority figures, and in
some cases, they are even fearful that they may not be believed, or they do not recognize that
they are victims of abuse. There is an umbrella covering these males that defines them as
uncapable of being victims of IPV. Studies have shown that males are less likely to report abuse
and receive necessary treatment as a result of fear of judgement, stigmatization, not being
believed, or being further victimized by authority figures. It seems that many males also are not
aware of resources available in their areas or how to go about finding appropriate support and
