Chemistry is a fascinating field of study that looks at the structure, characteristics, and behavior of matter. You will set out on a journey in your Grade 9 Science class to solve the atomic world's secrets, learn the wonders of chemical reactions, and delve into the periodic table's structure. These thorough study materials will provide you a strong foundation in chemistry, helping you to comprehend important ideas and do well on tests. Matter: The universe's fundamental building component is matter, which includes all substances that occupy space and have mass. There are three main states it can exist in: solid, liquid, and gas. Gases lack both a defined shape and volume in contrast to solids, which have both. Liquids have a defined volume but adopt the shape of their container. Elements and compounds make up the two kinds of matter. Elements cannot be divided into less complex things since they are pure compounds made up of just one sort of atom. Contrarily, things that are created through the chemical fusion of two or more elements are known as compounds. Atoms: The tiniest pieces of stuff that still have elemental characteristics are called atoms. They serve as the foundation for everything in the cosmos. Protons, neutrons, and electrons are the three subatomic particles that make up an atom. Neutrons are neutral and have no charge, while protons have a positive charge, and electrons have a negative charge. The atom's nucleus, which contains protons and neutrons, lies in its center. Electrons orbit the nucleus in various energy levels called shells. The word "atomic number" refers to the quantity of protons that determines an element's identity. The mass number is the sum of the protons and neutrons in an atom. Elements and the Periodic Table: Symbols, usually one or two letters derived from the names of the elements, are used to represent the elements. The periodic table is a table that groups elements according to their atomic weights and other shared characteristics. It offers a thorough review of all known elements, including their names, atomic weights, and symbols. Elements are categorized into families, groupings, and time periods. Periods are horizontal rows that represent the number of electron shells in an atom, while groups are vertical columns that represent related chemical properties. Understanding the relationships between elements and forecasting how they will behave in chemical reactions require the use of the periodic table. Compounds and Chemical Reactions: Chemical reactions, which entail the rearrangement of atoms to produce new molecules, are how compounds are created. Chemical equations that list the reactants (substances that undergo a reaction) and products (new substances created) are used to represent chemical reactions. In the equation, reactants are written on the left and products are written on the right. Chemical processes are characterized by the conservation of mass, which states that the total masses of the reactants and products are equal. The numerous types of chemical reactions include synthesis, decomposition, combustion, and displacement reactions. The material covered in these Grade 9 Science Chemistry study notes includes information on matter, atoms, elements, the periodic table, compounds, and chemical processes, among other important subjects. You can build a strong foundation in this intriguing area of science and be ready to handle more complex chemical principles in the future by thoroughly comprehending these ideas.

Grade 9 Science: Chemistry:

Particle Theory:
General Info:
● Matter is anything that has mass and volume
● Matter has 3 main states:
○ Solid
○ Liquid
○ Gas
● Examples of not matter:
○ Time
○ Sound
○ Light
○ Gravity
○ Energy
● Matter is made out of particles
● The particles are always moving

Particle Theory of matter:
1. All matter is made up of tiny particles that have empty spaces between them.
2. Different substances are made up of different kinds of particles.
3. Particles are in constant random motion.
4. The particles of a substance move faster as its temperature increases.
5. Particles attract each other.

Examples of particle theory of matter:

Solid: Liquid: Gas:

● Definite shape and volume ● No definite shape, but there is a ● No definite
● Strong attraction forces definite volume ● Little to no
● Packed together ● Particles are somewhat ● A lot of sp
● Little energy attracted to each other particles
● Can only vibrate in place ● More farther apart ● A lot of en
● A bit more energy ● Bounces a
● Can vibrate and move more in constan
easily (rotate)

Extra Notes:
● The particles themselves do not shrink or grow, the space between the particles grow or shr
● The more energy, the more movement, the more space between the particles
● Diffusion:
○ Diffusion is the movement of particles from a region of high concentration to low conc
the even mixing of substances.
○ Diffusion mostly happens in liquids and gasses. Liquid and gas particles bounce aroun
spread out. Gasses have more spaces in between the particles than liquids, so this cau
faster than liquids.
● Dissolving

, Classification of Matter:

● Pure substance:
● one type of atoms or molecules, has a constant composition and structure
○ Elements
■ Made up of one kind of atom
■ Cannot be broken down any further
■ If it is on the periodic table, it is an element
■ EX: hydrogen, oxygen, calcium, magnesium, nitrogen, lead
■ EX: helium gas in balloons
○ Compounds
■ Made up of molecules (2 or more different atoms chemically bonded together)
■ Can be broken into their individual atoms through chemical reactions
■ EX: water (made up of hydrogen and oxygen)
● water (H2O) <- means 2 hydrogen and an oxygen

■ EX: carbon dioxide (carbon and oxygen)
● carbon dioxide (CO2) <- means carbon dioxide and 2 oxygen
