1. RESEARCH PROJECT 12:
Gender-based violence and femicide: A social constructionist
and gendered-discourse approach

Research Area: ECOSYSTEMIC PSYCHOLOGY

Project description
 South Africa is characterized by high crime levels, with crime being understood to be
a "symptom of social and economic inequalities"
 In 2020, 51.1% of the South African population was female. Women have the highest
unemployment and poverty rates, with black African women being most vulnerable
with an unemployment rate of over 30%
 Approximately twenty-two per cent (22%) of South African women have
experienced a form of violence from their intimate partner, and 50% have
experienced a form of violence by a friend or acquaintance
 Gender-based violence is a societal concern
 It is said to be more prevalent in developing countries, and is often associated with
gendered power dynamics that contribute to gender inequality.
 Gendered power dynamics and gender-based violence is often maintained by
individual, social and cultural contexts
 According to literature, violence against women is associated with the expression
of masculinity, and as a means to gain respect from and control over women
 In the context of gender-based violence, patriarchy values men as superior to
women and children

Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Model
Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Model is a helpful framework to explore the contextual
and multi-layered systems that we belong to.

The Microsystem:
 is the innermost level
 and consists of the person's immediate environment,

 relationships,
 activities,
 and interactions with those closest to them.

The macrosystem level,
 or the outermost systemic layer,
 consists of the cultural values,
 laws,
 and customs embedded in one's culture.
 This includes societal systems, customs and cultural environments, for example, a
country's position on same-sex relationships, women's rights, and/or gender
equality.

 If we punctuate from the macrosystem, one way of understanding gender-based
violence is through the lens of postmodern feminism and intersectionality.
 Feminist research is regarded as an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary
approach to understanding gender, social constructions of gender dynamics, and
gender-based violence
 Underpinned with a critical lens, postmodern feminist theories aim to explore and
understand the power dynamics among groups
 In view of the above, this research project aims to explore gender-based violence
in the context of societal and cultural systems.
 Students in this project will learn about the societal ill that is gender-based
violence, and be able to understand it from a social constructionist, post-feminist
and critical perspective.
