SEMESTER 2 2023
ASSIGNMENT 1
a) In this systematic review, the main focus is on the mental health impacts of the COVID-19
pandemic on children and youth. The pandemic and its associated mitigation measures, such as
social isolation, disrupted routines, and limited access to resources, have had immediate and
potentially long-term effects on the mental well-being of young individuals. Factors contributing to
mental distress include concerns about infection, social isolation, socioeconomic stressors, and
reduced access to mental health services. The review highlights that disasters like the COVID-19
pandemic can lead to various mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic
stress disorder, substance use disorder, domestic violence, and child abuse. The text emphasizes the
importance of monitoring and addressing mental health at a population level, especially for
vulnerable groups with pre-existing disadvantages.
b) Raising awareness about mental health issues in children can be achieved through the following
ways:
1. Educational Campaigns: Launching targeted campaigns in schools, communities, and online
platforms to educate parents, teachers, and caregivers about children's mental health
challenges and available resources for support. Source: Mental Health America - "Children's
Mental Health Resource Kit."
