Er zijn teveel oncogenen aanwezig (spelen een belangrijke rol bij celdeling, bijv. HER2, neu). Er zijn te
weinig tumorsuppresorgenen (spelen een belangrijke rol bij tumorgroei). Er zijn te weinig DNA
herstelgenen (herstellen het DNA bij fouten,
na vermenigvuldigen van het DNA). Er is te
veel telomerose (zorgt voor het delend
vermogen van de cel).

Er zijn mutaties in het DNA op plekken die
celgroei regelen, dit resulteert in defecte
eiwitten. Eiwitten die celgroei promoten,
gaspedaal blijft hangen. Eiwitten die celgroei
remmen, rempedaal defect. Kanker ontstaat
door mutaties in genen.
