OOM1: Collaborating with Communities and Families to Enrich Learning
July 10, 2022 Collaboration with Students’ Families 2
The main student learning goal that is necessary for the students is to set smart goals for themselves. In an AVID class, we teachers want to help the students gain the ability to decide what they want for their own future. We the teachers will set the path for them to succeed. At the
beginning of the school year, I will ask the students to do a SMART goal activity. This activity will be like a check box to make meaningful goals. The method I will do to inform the parents about this activity is to send out a mass email. I want to let the parents know that the students are supposed to brainstorm what they want to set as a life goal. I will ask the parents to help ask their
children questions about what the children want to succeed at the end of the school year. This way the students are able to brainstorm at school and at home with the support they need. Parents
will also have their own expertise and advice for the students to set their own goals. When the students are ready, they will do the SMART goal activity and bring it to class before the deadline. By doing all this, the students are always supported in this thinking process. With all the guidance, the students are able to set great learning goals.
Collaboration with Community
One student learning goal that can be set with the community is career exposure. When the students come into class, they have an idea of what they want to do. However, most of them don’t know what the path they choose tells. Students will need help from their community to give them the experience they need to understand what they want to do. The Organization I would love to reach out to will be the college outreach program. The outreach program will have graduate students coming in to show students in high school what they do. This also will let the students go to the university to see the college career in person. The outreach program is not just for universities, NASA also has its outreach program for our students. This is where the teacher will need to reach out to the leaders of the program. The teacher will need to communicate with
