Unique number: 215092
Due date: 17 APRIL 2024
This assignment is based on UNIT 1 and UNIT 2 of Tutorial Letter 501. Read
through and study the material in the both the units as well as the relevant
sections of your prescribed book before answering the questions.
Section A: Questions based on Unit 1
Question 1
Write a short paragraph in which you explain, in your own words, why we
sometimes use the word “literatures” in the plural form instead of the word
“literature” in the singular form.
According to the study guide, pg.8
We use the word "literatures" in the plural form to acknowledge and embrace the rich
diversity of literary traditions across different cultures and time periods. Unlike the singular
term "literature," which often connotes a narrow focus on Western classics or canonical
texts, the plural form emphasizes the multitude of literary expressions found worldwide.
Each culture, whether it be Asian, African, Oriental, or any other, contributes its own
unique types of literature, reflecting distinct perspectives, values, and experiences.
Using the plural form, we recognize that there is no singular, universal definition of
literature; instead, it encompasses a broad spectrum of texts and cultural practices. Also,
the plural form underscores the evolving nature of people's responses to literature, as
societal norms and interpretations change over time. Overall, using "literatures" in the
plural highlights the inclusive and dynamic nature of literary discourse, encompassing
cultural diversity and adaptation.
