MRI Scans Questions and Answers 100% correct Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans -Uses radio waves -Resonance- Vibration of protons when the radio waves have been released. -Image produced by rotating tube -3D image produced on a screen so it can be viewed -MRI scan depends on magnetic properties How does the machine work? -Magnetic fields are used to align hydrogen protons in the body for the radio waves to be fired at the patient. -The protons will then resonate (vibrate) as the radio wave has been applied. -The radio waves are then released (release of energy) in the form of a radio signal and this is what is being detected. -It is then converted into an image. Uses -Investigating soft tissue problems -Diagnosing a brain tumour -Diagnosis of cancerous tumours -Brain activity (stroke and hemorrhage) -Brain tumour -Spinal cord -Neurological studies (which part of the brain does what) -Heart defects -After a heart attack Advantages -Non ionizing radiation -Not as harmful as CAT and X-ray scans -No known health risks -More detailed images -Good image of soft tissues -Produces 3D images Disadvantages -Machine less portable than x-rays -Can only be used on a smaller range of people compared to CAT and x-ray scans. People with pacemakers can't use them as the pacemaker is made of metal. -Fewer MRI scanners compared to x-ray scanners -Expensive -Takes a longer time compared to CAT scans and x-rays. Precautions -Patients who have a pacemaker must not use it as the magnetic field will affect it. -Metal within the body can't use it as the magnetic field will affect it. -Piecing's/hairclips (loose metal) have to be removed before entering. -Can cause claustrophobia (panic attacks, stress, anxiety) -Loud noise (panic attacks, stress, anxiety) can help to use ear protection. -Restricted movement (may need sedation, general anesthetic or a restraining brace for children). -First 12 weeks of pregnancy are not advised to have a MRI during this time.
