How did American foreign policy and engagement in international affairs change between 1876 and 1945
Scholars often refer to the 20th century as “The American Century,” as it marks the point in time in which the United States stepped onto the international stage and became a global empire for the first time in the nation’s brief history. America grew from a relatively isolationist nation in the mid-19th century to becoming one of the two most powerful nations in the world by the end of World War II and the beginning of the Cold War. For your second papers, I want you to examine American foreign and domestic policies in the early 20th century and answer the following question: How did American foreign policy and engagement in international affairs change between 1876 and 1945? To answer this question, you should consider the diplomatic, wartime, economic, and legal policies of the US and how they changed between the late-19th and mid-20th centuries. Since papers are only as strong as their clear central thesis, you must underline your thesis statement on this paper to demonstrate that I can identify your central argument. In arguing your thesis, you must point to at least three events/ideologies/policies, and discuss them in detail, and relate them back to your central thesis of change. You must cite each multiple times from each the lecture, the textbook, and primary source readings in your paper. Length: These papers are designed to be an in depth examination of course material up to this date. As such, the second papers should be between 1100 and 1250 words long, double-spaced, and have one-inch margins on all sides. Papers that are shorter than 1100 words will be subject to an automatic penalty and will undoubtedly suffer from their brevity. Due Date: Pa Citations: You must include footnote citations in your paper. DO NOT use parenthetical citations, you will be marked down if you do. Any evidence taken from lectures or readings, whether they be direct quotes or paraphrasing, should be cited. This is done so I can go through your papers and trace back your research path if need be. Your citations do not need to be ornate, simple examples are below: How the American Foreign Policy and Engagement in International Affairs Changed Between 1876 And 1945 The 20 th century marked a significant moment in American history. Most scholars refer to it as The American Century.; The period was crucial because America moved from Isolationism and the citizens became more economically empowered. Despite the prevailing conditions like racism, their freedoms were extended contrary to what was available a few years before. They did this by retaining western civilization by acts of generosity, courage, and vision that had not yet been seen anywhere else. 1 The country's advancement and global power came from retreat from Isolationism, implementation of policies such as the containment policy, and passing of bills to empower the citizens economically.
