2.1 “Mathematics is a language that makes use of symbols and notations to describe numerical, geometric and graphical relationships” (DBE 2011:8). Identify key concepts from this definition and give an example in each case. (10) The mentioned mathematics language helps to develop mental processes that enhance logical and critical thinking, accuracy and problem-solving that will contribute in decision-making(DBE 2011:8). Examples of these would include ● Numbers, Operations and Relationships - multiply effectively and have precise mental calculation skills. ● Patterns, Functions and Algebra - using functions to make predictions, what number comes next in the sequence. ● Space and Shape (Geometry) - Be able to draw two-dimensional shapes and build 3D objects. ● Measurement - measure angles, area, perimeter and capacity/volume. Different measuring tools ● Data Handling - a variety of contexts for collecting and interpreting data, interpreting statistics off a graph. 2.2 To develop essential mathematics skills, the learner should develop the correct use of language of Mathematics. How would you, as the teacher, clarify the meaning of fraction as “part of a whole where the whole is a single object” to a grade 4 learner? Use two different representations to illustrate your answer. (6) I would first show examples of wholes, then half and quarters and how they make a whole when adding them. Then I would first show the picture of a whole orange. Then give learners 2 pictures of the same orange to cut into 2 and the other into 4. I will show an image of 2 half of oranges, then 4 quarter oranges. I will then have them put the pieces together to show it makes a whole. 2.3 Answer the first three questions under “some clarification notes or teaching guidelines” on page 287 of the intermediate phase mathematics policy document (CAPS) (3) By how much is 34 x 17 less than 35 x 17? B- 17 TMN3704 ASSIGNMENT 3 Which of the statements below are equivalent to: 15 x (4 x 9)= 540 Both = 540 a) (15 x 4) x 9 b) 15 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 Choose the correct answer to (48 x 48) + (48 x 2) (48 x 48) = 2304 + (48 x 2) = 96 = 2400 a) 2 400 2.4 Complete Table 2.1(the third column) below to describe the difference between General content focus and Intermediate Phase specific content focus for the content area, Space and shape (Geometry)
