Suppose a flea market is arranged at your school. You as the Economic and
Management Sciences teacher are responsible for taking a group of Grade 7 learners
through some paces. Discuss your vital role focusing on the merits or demerits of each
of the following headings:

Flea markets enable teachers to introduce learners to entrepreneurship from an early
age. Involving learners in flea markets can be of great value to them.

Before the flea market

Before the flea market, as their teacher would ensure.

 that: learners understand the aim of the flea market
 that students get an idea how the market works
 that learners understand how to present a product or bargain with buyers
 learners learn to work-out a budget
 that simple financial statements are drawn up to help learners realise:

 enough time is set apart for these reviews as it forms a vital role of the learning
process
 learners are aware that they will have to provide feedback of the flea market and
share the experience of the day with the class

This is a time consuming process, requiring careful planning, set-up and preparation.

1.2 During the flea market
During the flea market, as Teacher would make it a point that:

 teachers are available at the flea market to help learners when needed
 teachers review the flea market properly:
 learners should be motivated all the times
 positive words of encouragement , cheering them up, clapping hands,
calling on their names, praising them
 create awareness that it is an easy way to start up informal business
without having to worry of money for renting premises,
 learn a lot about running a business a stepping stone for even ending up
running up a formal business
 learners learn:
 to work with money
 to ask for advice and to carry it out
 what is really in demand and what is not
 students should take up their role of sellers,
 students should adjust prices and their advertising slogans as the market works,
that is, they try to apply the skills in practice.

1.3 After the flea market

Since the review is so important, as Teacher:

 set aside a lot of time for review process and create opportunities for learners to
share their experiences with their classes.
 learners should also express their thoughts in written assignments.
 go through the learner’s budgets very carefully to see where mistakes have been
made and should make recommendations so that mistakes are not repeated.
 necessary to discuss with the students what they learned during the trade,

All in all learners will be aware that haggling" is commonplace at flea markets, with
buyer and seller both working to agree on a fair price, but using their own strategies.
The seller "talks up" his or her merchandise to make it as appealing as possible, while
